Baseballって何？シンプル英語のススメ

英語初学者にもちょうどよい「Simple English Wikipedia」

ベーシック英語、というのはチャールズ・オグデンという人が考えた理論なんですが、基本的には850語だけですべての表現が出来るというものです。 
日本語でも解説書が多数出ています。 

まぁ、実際にはそれだけの単語しか使えないとかえって回りくどい表現になったりするのですけど、でも外国人向けの英語辞書でも、ボキャブラリーを2000語程度に限定して説明文を書いてあったりします。 
中学で習う、基本的な単語を使ってあらゆる言葉を説明できるようになるのは、コミュニケーションの能力をアップする意味でもとても大事な事だと思います。 
日本でボキャビル、とか言うと、やたら難しい英単語をたくさん覚えることのようになってしまいますけど、そんな事よりも簡単な単語の意味を、英語を使ってきちんと説明できる方がずっと重要だと思いますね。 

たとえば"Baseball"と言う言葉がありますね。 
この単語が何を意味するのか、おそらく日本人のほぼ全員が言えるでしょう。 
そう「野球」です。 

ではbaseball、という言葉を全く知らない人に、この単語の意味するところを英語で説明せよ。 
これはどうでしょうか？ 
おそらく、日本人の95%以上は説明できないと思います。 
ひょっとしたら、99％の人が出来ないかもしれません。 
あれだけベースボールと言う競技に親しみ、自分でもプレーした事の多いスポーツなのに、そんな単語すら英語で言えないなんて… 
これは、やっぱり英語の勉強の仕方にどこか不味い点があるんだと言わざるをえないでしょう。

Baseball is a sport played by two teams that each have nine players. In baseball, one team throws a small round ball called a baseball and the other team tries to hit it with a club called a bat. Teams get points by running and touching markers on the ground called "bases".

これなら、中学生でも読めるし、英語の得意な子ならもっと簡単でいい説明が出来そうですね。 


ちなみに普通の英語版ウィキペディアでは、baseballは以下のように定義しています。 

Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players. The aim is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a bat and touching a series of four bases arranged at the corners of a 90-foot diamond. 

Players on the batting team take turns hitting against the pitcher of the fielding team, which tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on the batting team can stop at any of the bases and later advance via a teammate's hit or other means. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. One turn at bat for each team constitutes an inning and nine innings make up a professional game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.

自分が知らない単語をいまさら覚えるよりも、絶対に知っている言葉を英語で言えるようになったほうが、実践的な英語はより簡単に早く身に付くはずですね。
